Celebrating 25 years of Dance Studies at the University

As the forthcoming season is still being confirmed, we thought we would share with you some of the highlights of the last academic year. In April the department celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Dance at the University of Surrey. This included a variety of lectures by highly regarded visiting speakers, various dance shows and an exhilarating performance by staff in the department who teach on the BA (Hons) Dance and Culture programme and are all highly-regarded professional dancers and choreographers. The performance began with Kate Lawrence’s Vertical Dance, followed with African People's Dance by H Patten, new Ballet by Jennifer Jackson and Patrick Wood with Shima Kobayashi on chromatic harmonica, Contemporary dance by Jia-Yu Chang and Monique Kroepfli and Kathak produced by Amina Khayyam.

The event was well attended and the opportunity for audience participation was enjoyed by all, in addition to the interesting question and answer session at the end of the lecture, which allowed students and staff to raise and explore their own views on the subject area. The lecture was followed by a Dance Alumni Dinner in the Lakeside Restaurant where dance students past and present gathered to talk and reminisce on 25 years of dance at Surrey.

In addition, the 25th Anniversary celebrations included a series of talks, ‘Conversations with Choreographers’, with Kevin Finnan, Artistic Director of Motionhouse Dance Company, Maxine Doyle, Choreographer for Punchdrunk Theatre, and Wanda Moretti, Vertical Dance Choreographer from Venice, Italy.

And last but certainly not least, the spectacular Vertical Dance performance, choreographed by the department’s Kate Lawrence, drew the crowds despite the awful weather, to watch spell bound as the dancers scaled the outside of the University Library building.

A variety of student and professional performances are programmed throughout the academic year. Please check back regularly to see updates. The dance events programme for the next academic year will be available shortly.
