Head of Music Research and Professor of Popular Music
Allan Moore is Professor of Popular Music and Head of Music Research in the Department of Music and Sound Recording. He gained a first in music from the University of Southampton and a Masters' in Composition from the University of Surrey before returning to Southampton to complete a PhD in 1990 on the late chamber music of Roberto Gerhard and the problem of an adequate analytic method. Until 1999 he led research in the London College of Music and Media at Thames Valley University, and has also taught at Royal Holloway (University of London) and City University.
Subsequent to his doctoral research, Prof. Moore changed tack and is now best known for his research in the musicology of popular music, work which has so far produced four sole authored books (the most recent a study of the Jethro Tull album Aqualung), three edited collections, and more than thirty book chapters and articles in addition to reviewing for various journals including Music and Letters, the British Journal of Music Education and Music Analysis. He appears from time to time on BBC Radio and TV as a popular music critic, and has contributed to various filmed documentaries, most particularly on the Beatles. He is a founder member of the Critical Musicology Forum, is founding co-editor of twentieth-century music and is on various editorial and advisory boards (most notably for Popular Music and the Journal of the Society for American Music). He is a member of the executive of the National Association for Music in Higher Education, and of the AHRC peer review college. A recipient of grants from the AHRC and PALATINE (the HEFCE teaching & learning centre for the performing arts), he is co-instigator of the European Dialogues in Musicology. Details of Prof. Moore's current research projects can be found here.
Still composing and performing, you can occasionally find him stumbling his way through the odd magic ballad at a local folk club…
