Composition at University of Surrey
Composition at Surrey has always been enterprising, bringing the hard work of composers to public performance through the following annual events:
- Concert of Electronic Music: new pieces by students involving electronics and improvisation.
- One Minute Wonders: Clive Williamson, Head of Keyboard, presented a whole recital of new, specially composed pianos pieces, each lasting one minute, including four by members of staff and 23 by students.
Selected items from this concert were subsequently recorded by Clive WIlliamson and can be heard by following this link.
- The weekend workshop, annual since 1989, run jointly by the Departments of Music and Dance Studies: composers and players, choreographers and dancers, are grouped into five sets and collaborate over the weekend in the creation of new pieces, bringing these two parallel disciplines together in an explorative manner.
- The David Lovatt Prize: This is a new, annual prize, in memory of a former student who died two years ago, for a piece for chamber ensemble, to be performed by our visiting ensemble Gemnini. This year's winning piece, by Neil Luck (Year 2 BMus), is given its first public performance. It will be recorded the next day.
- The Joyce Dixey Concert, annual since 1967 (the list of former prize-winners includes some names that are now well known in the profession): current composers from all years present new pieces, and the winning entry receives a prize, financed by the MCPS.
