"Individual Differences In Sleep"
Thank-you for your interest in this PhD research study, please read the following information about the study and about data protection.
This first part of the study is an online questionnaire assessing your sleep and general health. Those who agree to send their sleep and health question answers with a contact email address and are accepted as being in good health, will be asked initially to participate in Part 1 - Field Study, after completing Part 1 some participants may then be asked to take part in Part 2 - Laboratory Study. The Part 1 - Field Study includes a 2 and a half week daily diary study of your normal sleep patterns. During the diary study you will be asked to wear an actiwatch while completing the sleep diary, which is a motion sensor (approximately the size of a wrist watch). Also you will attend the Surrey Sleep Research Centre to complete further questionnaires characterising your psychological profile and life-style, taking approximately 2 hours. Saliva samples will be taken at this visit to analyse circadian clock and sleep-related genes from your DNA. After the diary study your sleep and wake EEG, EOG, EMG and ECG will be recorded with a portable ambulatory vitaport for two nights in your home. Your alertness and performance during waking will be measured using computerised tests. We will also ask you if you would be willing to be contacted to take part in future, separate studies only within the Surrey Sleep Research Centre. You would be asked to sign a written consent form and by doing this you are only agreeing to be contacted and not agreeing to take part in a future study. You will always be given full information about the background, procedures and measurements etc before agreeing to take part.Participants will be reimbursed for their time and inconveniencefor completing the sleep diaries, wearing the actiwatch, completing the questionnaires and for the sleep and wake recording.
The data from those people meeting the selection criteria will be retained in a secure unit under password protection. The data from any questionnaire not meeting the selection criteria will be deleted and no contact will be made. After selection, individuals will be required to read a study information sheet and sign a written consent form to allow their data to be kept and analysed in an anonymous way. This PhD project is under the supervision of Dr. Derk-Jan Dijk in the Surrey Sleep Research Centre. All data is treated as sensitive and no link will be made from the data to any individual.
