Welcome from the Head of School
of Human Sciences
Professor Nick Emler
The School, with over 200 staff and 1400 students is one of the
most active and dynamic in the University and has world-wide connections
with research and enterprise partners.
For students, the School provides 3 and 4 year single and joint undergraduate
honours degree courses in Economics, Psychology and Sociology. At Surrey,
students on 4 year courses benefit from a University managed Professional
Placement year. This contributes to our overall ranking as Number 1
out of all UK universities for employment prospects For postgraduates,
the School provides flexible modular taught masters courses with pathways
to specialist qualifications in each discipline and a stimulating and
supportive environment in which students can pursue their own doctoral
research studies.
For researchers, the international calibre of the School's work has
been confirmed by the latest Research Assessment Exercise(RAE): Sociology
gained the highest ranking of 5*, Psychology a 5 and Economics a 3A..
This combined with our dedicated research centres - Digital World Research
Centre (DWRC) and Food, Consumer Behaviour and Health Research Centre
(FCBHRC) - testify to the School's high-calibre research activity.
The School has a well-earned reputation for research and enterprise
in both the private and public sectors. Keen to form research partnerships
with clients who value their relationship with their employees, environments,
customers and publics, the School has an established track record of
delivering human science research that fulfils commercial objectives
