The human sciences address some of the most demanding and stimulating
research challenges that we face at the start of the 21st century. All
our research in the social and behavioural sciences is officially acknowledged
to be of the national standard and in the majority of our fields is
literally world class.
The School of Human Sciences comprises the Departments of Economics
(RAE 2001 - 3A), Psychology (RAE 2001 - 5) and Sociology (RAE 2001 -
5*), and specialist research centres including, the Surrey Energy Economics
Centre, the Centre for Research in Ageing and Gender (CRAG), the ESRC
Question Bank and the CAQDAS qualitative software networking project.
Many of today's pressing research problems require the expertise of
more than one discipline. Researchers in the School are involved in
a number of multi-disciplinary research areas including the Digital
World Research Centre and the Food, Consumer Behaviour and Health Research
Centre.
Each department prides itself on undertaking applied research within
a strong theoretical framework. There is a tradition of research on
contemporary issues which informs the policies and practices of governments,
industry, business and social support agencies.
Our research mission importantly includes providing leading expertise
in the methods of social and behavioural research. Our research output
is therefore enhanced by methodological sophistication and state-of-the-art
technological resources.
