Vice President Research and Innovation

Professor Stephen Williamson

The Vice President Research and Innovation reports directly to the President on all aspects of the University's research activities. He is directly responsible for setting policy and strategy for research and innovation within the University.

Specific responsibilities include:

 Policy and Strategy

Playing a key role in the initiation, formulation and monitoring of the University’s strategic plans for its research activities;

Identifying opportunities to match the University’s existing skills with current and new research funding streams;

Developing the skills of relevant individuals in order to make full use of all potential research resources.

 Research

Championing research and identifying and encouraging practices which increase the quality and volume of basic, applied and strategic research across the University;

Responding to external enquiries and initiatives as appropriate;

Developing international research links and funded activities, in association with the Dean of International Relations;

Coordinating and promoting nominations for major academic fellowships and honours;

Monitoring research performance across the University, leading and coordinating the optimisation of the University’s returns under the new Research Excellence Framework.

 Innovation

Encouraging an enterprising approach to research-related commercial activities across the University, in liaison with the Director of Research and Enterprise Support;

Encouraging the establishment of strategic links between Faculties and organisations on the Surrey Research Park;

Working with other senior managers to set policies and strategies for innovation across the University.
