Frequently Asked Questions
We receive a lot of queries into the Vice-Chancellor's Office and you may find the following Frequently Asked Questions and their answers helpful.
- Who is the Vice-Chancellor and what does he do?
Professor Sir Christopher Snowden has been President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey since 1st August 2005. His responsibility is to lead the University and define its academic direction and strategy. He is also responsible for ensuring that it is well managed, and he has a first-rate team of colleagues who work with him to ensure the success of the University. Read Sir Christopher's biography here.
- I would like to invite the Vice-Chancellor to an event/conference/meeting, etc?
Please send your invitation to the Vice-Chancellor's EA who looks after Sir Christopher's diary. She will be able to check if he is free to attend and then will pass the invitation to the Vice-Chancellor to consider. If appropriate the Vice-Chancellor may suggest that one of his senior colleagues attends in his place.
- I would like the Vice-Chancellor to give a speech at my event/conference?
In the first instance please send your invitation to the Vice-Chancellor's EA who looks after Sir Christopher's diary. She will check if the Vice-Chancellor is free to attend and then the request will be passed to him to consider. Please specify in your invitation whether you require a short 5 minute verbal welcome, a longer keynote speech, or powerpoint presentation. On some occasions, the Vice-Chancellor may recommend that one of his senior colleagues may be more appropriate to give the speech.
If confirmed, a questionnaire will be sent to you by the Vice-Chancellor's Executive Officer in order that you can provide all the relevant details so that an appropriate speech can be prepared.
- I am from an overseas University and would like to discuss a possible partnership with the University of Surrey / We would like to arrange a visit to the University.
The University of Surrey is committed to becoming an international university. It's international strategy is built on three types of engagement: Global Partnerships, Strategic Partnerships, Bilateral Accords. Please visit the web pages of the International Relations Office for further information and for contact details.
- I am a student and have a complaint and would like to speak to the Vice-Chancellor.
The University takes all student complaints very seriously. It has a set of procedures in place to ensure that all complaints that are lodged are dealt with quickly and fairly. We ask that students do not contact the Vice-Chancellor in the first instance, but follow these set procedures. The Dean of Students Office has responsibility for the University Complaints and Grievance Procedure. The University Complaints and Grievance Procedure can be accessed from the Dean of Students webpages.
- I am a parent and wish to make a complaint on behalf of my son/daughter who is a student at the University.
The University takes all complaints very seriously, but first, you need to be aware that the University is not "in loco parentis". This means that the University will not act in a parental capacity towards your child. Any complaint must be made by the student him/herself and not a third person such as a parent, guardian or teacher unless the student gives the University explicit permission to deal with another party on their behalf. We also require that the student initiate the grievance process. Please refer to the Complaints and Grievances guide for further information.
- I am a member of staff and have a complaint and would like to speak to the Vice-Chancellor.
The University takes all complaints very seriously. We ask that in the first instance, staff try to resolve their grievances within the relevant Department/Centre/Faculty or Administrative/Service Department. If you feel the matter needs to be taken further there are certain procedures that need to be followed. Please refer to the Grievance Policy guide within the Human Resources website.
If the complaint is against a student then this matter will need to be taken up by Registry.

The full list of High Officers (sometimes referred to as Officers of the University) can be found here. They should be contacted via the Secretariat. Except HRH The Chancellor who should be contacted via Sam Jones in the Vice-Chancellor's Office.
