The University of Surrey's 120th Anniversary – A History of Shaping the Future
This year, The University of Surrey reaches a special milestone – 120 years of people, ideas and achievements that continue to transform and benefit the world. In 2011 we are celebrating the best of Surrey’s rich history and looking forward to the future. Here we will be reflecting on a wide variety of achievements and world-changing ideas that have taken place from our earliest days at Battersea and that continue to this day in Guildford and beyond through our work with students and partners across the world.
As the year progresses we will be sharing information about Anniversary events as they happen and providing snapshots of just some of the milestones and achievements we’re celebrating.
Just some of the activities planned for the year include the publication of a new edition of Surrey’s commemorative book, “A History of Shaping the Future”, which brings our story right up to date. We are looking forward to naming many of our roads and buildings in recognition of the achievements of some of our brightest stars, and later in the year we will be welcoming some of our earliest Battersea graduates to update the qualifications that have served them so well over the years with honorary degrees from Surrey.
The introduction of the “Guildford Roll of Honour” award in partnership with Guildford Borough Council will be the beginning of a new, shared tradition of honouring local people who have made extraordinary contributions to the life and economy of the Guildford area. A special ‘history’ edition of our magazine, SurreyLife, will be published in June and will be available online.
From our earliest days our core purpose as a University that educates top graduates for top jobs has never wavered and this year it’s therefore particularly appropriate that we celebrate our long-standing record as number one in the UK for employability. Surrey led the field in introducing a professional training year for students in 1955 . What continues to set our approach apart is the joint commitment of the student, the tutor and the employer to applying learning and developing workplace skills from day one.
Our determination to deliver a top class university experience for our students remains a key priority for us. Even whilst we look back and celebrate our past, remembering our origins as a pioneer in providing new approaches to advanced education, we are embedding this year a completely new framework for learning and teaching that ensures the educational services we offer to students maximise their chances of real success and the value of the investment they make in their future.
We have preserved the original vision for The University of Surrey as ‘a walking university’ like ‘a compact hill town…surrounded by trees, with an encircling wall of academic buildings’ and celebrate the investment we’ve been able to make in our physical environment whilst remaining true to those original ideals. This year we will be opening the doors of a new, state of the art, learning resources centre, launching the Surrey International Space Innovation Centre (Surrey ISIC) on the Research Park, opening the Ivy Theatre in a reflection of our commitment to a broad education for students, and creating a reception building and new facilities to improve services for students on our Manor park student village. Our research continues to gain real recognition too with key exhibitions at the Royal Society for Physics and Chemistry and the launch of a fantastic new partnership with the BBC.
