With introductory talk by Dr Tim Hughes
D A Pennebaker’s Monterey Pop (1968) and Michael Wadleigh’s Woodstock (1970) are two of the most important and popular music documentaries ever made, largely because of the impact of the two music festivals they recorded. Each film climaxes with iconic images of Jimi Hendrix in performance, setting his guitar on fire at Monterey and playing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Woodstock—the latter one of the most important musical statements in American history. However these are only brief scenes, presented as part of a larger festival. Jimi Plays Monterey and Jimi Hendrix Live At Woodstock were assembled years later by Chris Hegedus from surviving footage. Each film presents Hendrix’ entire set, for the first time giving the filmgoer a sense of what these performances were like as concerts.
