In 1984, the music of Prince crossed-over to cinemas everywhere with his hit film Purple Rain. Most reviewers praised the music enthusiastically, but criticised the film itself as a B-grade version of the traditional “backstage musical.” Both observations, however, missed the central point that audiences immediately understood: Purple Rain is not a film but rather a long-form music video, made to capture all the excitement, complexity, contradiction, and glory of Prince as a live performer. It remains today a dynamic portrait of an artist at the precise moment when he was the world’s most interesting musician.
