This season the Australian-based ensemble austraLYSIS will be transforming the ambience of Studio One into a den of improvisational activity and sounds in a rare opportunity to see them perform live in the UK on 22 October. In October we will also be hosting the Eighth British Contemporary Piano Competition, with preliminary rounds and the final taking place in PATS Studio One. The young and 'virtuosic Fidelio Trio' (The Sunday Times) will be gracing the Studio One stage in December and the University Symphony Orchestra will perform Mahler's Symphony No 4 at St. Saviour's Church.
Stop Press: The University Orchestra and Choir will be performing Bizet's wonderful Carmen (concert performance) in the beautiful setting of Guildford Cathedral on Saturday 19th February 2011. Tickets are available to buy now from the University Box Office on 01483 686 876.

Normally given by undergraduate and postgraduate students specialising in performance, the repertoire at these concerts is extremely varied. It's a great opportunity to hear some familiar and not so well known works. Programmes for these events are not usually available in advance but can be emailed to you a few days before the recital by j.harber@surrey.ac.uk

The first PhD recital to be held at the University of Surrey will be given by Jonathan Leathwood performing on six-string and ten-string guitars. Jonathan Leathwood, now based at the University of Colorado, USA, is one of the world’s leading exponents of contemporary classical guitar music.

Describing himself as ‘the bastard child of acoustic finger style’, the Austrian born guitarist Thomas Leeb owes as much to percussive techniques as traditional finger style guitar, with tunes punctuated by slaps, pops and beats. The resulting blur of busy hands and fingers really has to be seen to be believed.

First performances of six new student pieces by competition finalists Davy Berryman, Demetri Kastelanides, Tom Kilworth, Rachel Musgrove, Jeevan Rai and Jake Willson. The new compositions draw on a wide variety of influences from Middle Eastern folk music to contemporary jazz. At the end of the concert the winner will be announced by Ian Mitchell, director of Gemini.
