During his early years Franchi studied at l'Instituto Statale d'Arte di Lucca and the Academy of Art in Florence. The guidance of sculptors such as Vitaliano de Angelis and Oscar Gallo, both Maestri, helped in developing his career. In 1976 Franchi became an assistant teacher at the Academy delle Belle Arti in Florence.
