This exhibition will explore this artist retreat that began with a visit by George and Mary Watts to Compton in 1889 and ended with the creation of the Watts Gallery in 1903.
Built as an autumn and winter retreat for the artist George Frederic Watts OM RA (1817-1904) and his wife Mary Fraser Tytler (1849-1938) Limnerslease was their Surrey country home and studio. Completed in 1891 it provided the place in which Mary could motivate the village and create the Cemetery Chapel and Compton Pottery whilst Watts could paint in peace drawing inspiration from the landscape around him.
The celebrated watercolour painter Alexander Creswell is currently occupying Watts’s Studio at Limnerslease in order to push the boundaries of his medium. One of his paintings will feature in the exhibition. The Watts Gallery Trust wishes to save Limnerslease for the nation. All enquiries or offers of support to director@wattsgallery.org.uk
