An illustrated talk by Jon Edgar
Jon Edgar is a sculptor of the Frink School, a small independent sculpture academy whose focus on the human figure remains the first source of inspiration, as it has from the earliest times. Edgar balances work in clay - portraits of sitters of whose independent stance he is appreciative - with carving by hand. Discarding the maquette as deadening to creativity and using methods of improvisation gives him the freedom to quarry things inside himself.
The image-rich lecture will touch upon the impetus behind sittings for the Sculpture Series, such as Wilfred Cass, Professor Glynn Williams, Peter Randall Page, Peter Murray and Roy Strong; and look at the search for clay in Compton, Surrey for a head that became three. New works in relief have emerged for the linked exhibition at the Lewis Elton Gallery - the sculptor’s discovery of an important and previously unseen 1st century Roman sculpture may subconsciously have influenced it.
