Dr Martin Polley talks about his latest book 'The British Olympics: Britain’s Olympic Heritage 1612 - 2012'. It charts the fascinating story of Britain’s relationship with the Games. As London prepares to be the first city in the world to stage the modern Olympic games for the third time, Polley reveals that the 2012 Games will also mark the 400th anniversary of the first ever Olympic Games to be staged on Brithish Soil.
Martin Polley is a Senior Lecturer in Sport at the University of Southampton and a regular contributor to UTV Radio’s Talk Sport. Former Chair of the British Society of Sports Historians, Polley's first encounter with Olympic history came when as a schoolboy athlete in west London he found himself running past the old White City Stadium, following in the footsteps of the 1908 marathon runners. He has since walked the full route and written extensively on the events of that memorable day. Still a keen distance runner and a lifelong supporter of Brentford FC, Martin is the author of 'Moving the Goalposts: A History of Sport and Society since 1945' (Routledge, 1998), and 'Sports History: A Practical Guide' (Palgrave, 2007). He also edited 'The History of Sport in Britain, 1880-1914' (Routledge, 2003).
