An evening with Alf Adams, Grandfather of Modern Lasers.
The University of Surrey presents the inaugural Alf Adams lecture entitled "Semiconductor Lasers Take The Strain" on Monday 27 February at 7.00pm at the Royal Society, London in the presence of His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent, Chancellor of the University.
The series is named in honour of Surrey's distinguished Professor of Physics, Professor Alf Adams whose work on strained quantum well lasers made CD and DVD technology possible and was named as one of the Top Ten greatest UK scientific breakthroughs of all time. These laser diodes are used everywhere and can be found not only in our DVD players but for example in telecommunications, medical technology, supermarket check-outs and underpin the new ultrafast broadband.
During the lecture, Alf will briefly explain how lasers work and why the introduction of strain into semiconductors crystals enhances their ability to produce light. He will present examples and a demonstration showing why they are now key components in modern technology and the roles they play in our everyday life.
