EE graduate reaches finals of the 2010 SET Awards

Tuesday 14 September 2010

Congratulations to Robert Topley, one of our EE graduates this year, on reaching the finals for the 2010 SET (Science Engineering & Technology) awards.

Rob was one of three finalists for the ARM Award for ‘Best UK Student in Electronic Engineering’; nomination was based on his final year project supervised by Professor Graham Reed. Rob, together with Dr. Neil Emerson, attended the awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel (Park Lane) in London last Friday and although Rob was not the ultimate winner, he is to be congratulated on reaching the finals for this highly prestigious award.

Graham Reed comments: “Rob’s project contributed to an investigation into a silicon based all optical modulation system. The ultimate goals of this work were to produce a purely optical modulation system intent on removing the bandwidth limitations of conventional electronic modulation systems. I am delighted with Rob’s achievement in the SETS awards. He carried out a significant amount of work in a range of discipline areas, all to a very high standard ”.

This is the third time in four years that one of our graduating BEng students has made it to the final three. In 2007 Thomas Connolly won the best student award in Materials Science and in 2009 Alex Samuels was in the final three for the same award.

Rob is to return to the Department, in the coming year, as a PhD student in the ATI, with Graham Reed as his supervisor. Well done Rob and best wishes for the future with your PhD studies.
