Micro World to Real World - Surrey Research Students at The Times Cheltenham Science Festival

Tuesday 6 July 2010

Four Surrey research students, each working at a different scale of the micro world, explored the possible applications of their research for solving real world problems at this year’s Times Cheltenham Science Festival.

The Festival took place between the 9th and 13th June 2010 at the Cheltenham Town Hall.  Samantha Shaw revealed some outstanding properties of carbon nanotubes and their applications from drug delivery, to tissue growth, to water filtering.

The energy of atomic nuclei could one day be harnessed in batteries with capacities thousands of times those of conventional ones. Emma Suckling introduced the fascinating Physics behind this radical idea.

Charles Opoku and Radu Sporea shared their vision of flexible electronics made with unconventional materials, such as nanowires and organic semiconductors.
