ATI researchers attend SET for Britain event at the House of Commons

Tuesday 16 March 2010

Researchers from the ATI joined other early-stage and early-career research scientists who were given an opportunity to present their research at the SET for Britain event, held at the House of Commons on the 8th March.

Kosmas Tsakmakidis and Nick Bright were amongst 60 researchers selected to present their work to local MPs. There were three categories in the exhibition;  Physical Sciences, Biological and Biomedical Science, and Engineering.

Kosmas, an RAEng/EPSRC Research Fellow, won the runner-up prize of £1000 in the Engineering category for his poster "'Trapped Rainbow' Stopping of Light for Speeding Up Computers and the Internet".

Kosmas comments "I am delighted to win such an award.  The SET for Britain event provided me with an excellent opportunity to showcase some of the interesting and exciting research that is conducted here at Surrey".

Nick Bright, a PhD student working in the Surrey Ion Beam Centre, commented “I really enjoyed taking part in SET for Britain. It was very interesting to meet other early-career researchers and hear about their work.  To be selected to present my work to my peers and also non-scientists and politicians was a real privilege and to do it early in my research career was also a fantastic achievement.  Deciding to do a PhD at Surrey has been one of the best decisions I have made”.
