Research on quantum-well lasers listed in poll of scientific discoveries

Thursday 17 June 2010

Research by our very own Professor Alf Adams is listed in fifth place in a poll of top scientific discoveries. The poll to mark universities week features in the Mail Online and is taken from academics at UK universities who were asked to name the top scientific discoveries amongst their peers.

Alf’s work on strained quantum-well lasers led to the development of CDs, DVDs and the internet.  The other discoveries sharing fifth place are the identification of key genes governing and regulating cell cycle and division in cancer and The Gaia hypothesis.
