Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are the aims of the IAA?
From Surrey's perspective, the IAA aims to accelerate the exploitation of current or recently-completed funded EPSRC research, through the increased engagement with key stakeholders and project partners. This in turn will demonstrate the impact Surrey's research has had/is having on society in the UK, both socially and economically.

Why should I get involved with the IAA?
The IAA can help to fund your pilot or proof of concept project with the benefits of increased speed and reduced costs. The IAA can help to potentially increase the TRL of your research and provide connections to academic expertise and industrial collaborators.

Will the IAA fund my research?
No; the IAA funds the development of research, rather than research itself.

Who do I contact with my idea?
All enquiries should be made to the IAA Project Officer in the first instance who will then refer you to the appropriate IAA Connector for further discussion.

How much IAA funding can I expect to receive towards my development project?
The amount of funding available depends entirely on what the project requires in terms of staff time, purchase of materials, use of equipment and so on. The maximum amount for IAA funding is £20,000.  However, if milestones and deliverables are met in the agreed project timescale, further funding from the IAA may be available.  The IAA expects to see matched funding from the external collaborator, with the contribution either as cash or in-kind.

How do I apply?
Whether you're an external organisation, looking to work with the University, or an academic, unsure as to how to proceed, it is advised that you contact the IAA Project Officer in the first instance.  The IAA Project Officer will then direct you to the appropriate IAA Connector to talk through your idea and help you to complete the application form so it meets the requirements of the review panel.  If you are an external organisation, the IAA Connector can put you in touch with an academic here at Surrey.

The application process is very simple; the form (to be completed by the Surrey academic) can be found here.  You are asked to provide detail on the background to your project idea, the roadmap and milestones for completing it using IAA funds and any IP considerations.  In addition to this, there are a few basic questions on start dates, project length, funding breakdown etc.

Once your application form is formally submitted, it will be reviewed by an expert panel with a decision given following the next IAA Project Board meeting (details of which will be published on the website in advance).  Further details of the application procedure can be found by visiting the page 'How to apply for IAA funding'.

These questions have been compiled to address some of the initial queries you may have. They are aimed at both an external and internal audience. If you do not find the answer you are looking for here, please contact the IAA Project Officer for more information.
