Employability Zone

On 11th October 2012, for the second time, we had our Employability Zone running alongside the Careers and Placement Fair.

There were 7 sections within the zone all offering you the chance to drop in and have an informal discussion with a range of experts in different topics.

CV Tips and advice

Careers advisers and experienced graduate recruiters were available to explain how you can develop an effective CV.

Careers Service

Hundreds of students came along to our stand to pick up a free  directory and to find out about the range of opportunities we have to help them. Check out What’s On next week, how you can  sign up, why Joining  John on a Tuesday is a must and what insight you can get from the Welcome to my World or Inspiring Futures series

Equality and Diversity

Improve your employability prospects with a better understanding of equality and diversity.
With recent changes in legislation, employers are now more than ever looking for staff who can demonstrate their commitment to equality and diversity. Understanding what it means to be part of a varied and diverse workforce and how you can contribute is essential. Come and talk to us about how you can increase your awareness, improve your understanding of equality and diversity and sign up for some online training which will help prepare you for the world of work.
Come and visit the Equality and Diversity stand to find out more!

How to use social media in a job hunt

Brendan Mare of Philips were available to talk about how you can use social media tools to benefit you in your job hunt. Many recruiters are using social media to promote their vacancies, so come and learn how to make the most of the time you spend on social media platforms. Advice was given on Facebook, Blogging, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube.

Volunteering

Whether you are just beginning or nearing the end of your time at Surrey, there are plenty of opportunities for you to get more out of your university. The Students’ Union is run by students for students and we want to help all of you to learn, develop and advance. Come and chat to Clem, the Volunteering and Training Coordinator, about your options. Gain experience in fundraising, run voluntary youth groups, attend public speaking workshops and much more all to bolster your already impressive CV.

Working with the Careers Service, the Students’ Union is committed to helping you develop and add to your life experience because university isn’t just about getting a degree. We can help you improve your skills, meet new people, gain real-life experience and create some great memories along the way. Drop by our stall and we can discuss your next step.

Thinking of starting your own business? Want to know a bit more about the options and the process?

Want to talk to someone who has been there and done it – and learned an awful lot about the ups and downs in the 20 years it took?

Nigel Biggs is the university’s entrepreneur-in-residence and is available for advice, guidance, mentoring and general business support. Nigel is always happy to meet students 1:1 as well as running workshops, seminars and the enterprise summer bootcamp. He provides help and, where possible, links students to relevant contacts in the business world.

Nigel was available in the employability zone but can also be contacted directly at n.biggs@surrey.ac.uk
