The Careers Service weekly employability session is run by the Director, John Watkins. There is an open invitation to any interested party to come along and spend an hour enhancing their understanding of the expectations of employers and how the skills that they seek can be developed in the safety of the university environment.
Attendees can therefore expect to participate actively in practical exercises which illustrate the importance of certain skills – a far better way to learn and often more effective in allowing understanding of personal strengths and areas for improvement.

Employability pyramid explained:
Taking skills to a higher level
The weekly sessions will not be individually titled nor the precise content specified as the nature of employability skills is that they are not mutually exclusive. Instead, participants will each week be exposed to interesting and often entertaining challenges that will highlight the importance of many or all of the following:
- effective communication
- operating as part of a high performing team
- building and developing a personal network
- dealing with adversity
- meeting customer needs
- influencing successfully
- negotiating optimum outcomes
- problem solving
- adapting to changing circumstances
- leadership and followership
The JOIN JOHN sessions are designed to capture interest in improving employability skills and participants will have access to a wide range of supplementary support. The development of these skills is proven to make a difference in the confidence of individuals as well as enhancing their cv and prospects of performing well in recruitment processes. During the hour there will also be the opportunity to build relationships with other attendees, enhancing personal networks and actively practicing one of key employability skills.
JOIN JOHN – 6 - 7pm every Tuesday evening, meeting at the Careers Service in the Philip Marchant Building.

‘I want to encourage experiential learning rather than just listening to me speak.’
