Bio and Abstract:

Prof. Syed Ali Rizwan is Head of Structural Engineering department, National University of Science and Technology in Pakistan. He has obtained several prestigious scholarships and awards over the years and has organised many conferences within the area of cement based materials and concrete science and technology. He is an ex Surrey graduate and did his MSc in Structural Engineering in 1981. Later on he completed his PhD in 2006 from the Technical University, Freiberg, Germany. The title of his thesis is "High Performance Mortars and Concretes Using Secondary Raw Materials". He also conducted post-doctoral research in Germany in 2009 looking at High Early Strength Self-Compacting Grout Systems. He started his career as a Lecturer of Civil Engineering in 1976 at the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan and consistently progressed to the Professor of Civil Engineering in 1993. He joined the National University of Science and Technology in 2008 as the Head of Structural Engineering.

His research interests include High Performance/Self-Compacting Cementitious Systems and Concrete Admixtures, etc. In today’s talk, he will discuss the development of self compacting concrete and will touch upon the basic issues related with it. He will also highlight the difference in responses of such concrete in laboratory conditions, at the manufacturing plants, and at the placement sites. Specific reference will be made to his experience of testing the response of self-consolidating systems at a German Tunnel located at 150 m deep w.r.t. ground level.
