PROFESSOR TO DELIVER A KEYNOTE LECTURE ON THE DESIGN OF FOUNDATIONS FOR OFFSHORE WIND TURBINES
Wednesday 21 November 2012
Professor Subhamoy Bhattacharya, Chair in Geomechanics will be delivering a keynote lecture this month at the International Symposium on Coastal and Offshore Geotechnics to be held in Zhejiang University (Hangzhou city, China).
He will be discussing the dynamic soil-structure interaction issues related to the design of offshore wind turbines. Choosing appropriate foundations for supporting offshore wind turbines is one of the uncertainties in the future rounds of offshore wind power development in the UK. Offshore wind turbines are dynamically sensitive structures as the global natural frequency of the whole system is very close to the forcing frequencies (due to the environmental loads and the associated frequencies due to the rotor). His lecture will focus on the dynamic characteristics of the whole wind turbine system and the issues related to the prediction of the long term performance.
