Biography

Dr. Sabèha Ouki  is a Chemical Engineer with a Diplome d’Ingenieur d’Etat from l’Ecole Nationale Polytechnique, an MSc in Chemical Engineering and a PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh USA.   Upon graduation she joined the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London as a research fellow where she has worked on the development of novel technologies for water pollution treatment systems. In 1995 she was appointed as a Foundation Fund Lecturer in Environmental Engineering at the University of Surrey and promoted to Reader in 2000.  From 2003-2008 she was Director for Doctoral Research Studies for  the School of Engineering and Director of the MSc Programmes in Water and Environmental Engineering within the Civil, Chemical and Environmental Engineering Division from 2008 to present. 

Her research interests are mainly focussed on novel water/wastewater treatment processes and systems, contaminated land remediation and waste management issues.   Most of her research activities are funded by industry, EPSRC, TSB and the EU with collaboration at both national and international level. She has in excess of 80 paper publications, supervised 11 Doctoral Students and in excess of 55 MSc Dissertations.  She is currently Deputy Director of the Centre for Environmental and Health Engineering (CEHE).

  • Extent and fate of metal-based manufactured nanoparticles (MNPs) in aqueous and soil systems
  • Novel technologies for the conversion and beneficial reuse/application of waste materials
  • Development of remediation technologies for contaminated land

  • Optimising advanced anaerobic digestion processes for sustainable energy extraction from sewage sludge- Funded by EPSRC/Thames Water - 2012-2016
  • Innovative processes for improving Mesophyllic Anaerobic Digestion (MAD) for efficient biogas production - Collaborative project funded by Thames Water Utilities (2010-2013).
  • Development of robust  sustainable wastewater treatment systems- Funded by EPSRC/Thames Water Utilities (2010-2014).

ON-GOING PROJECTS

  • Effect of climate change on groundwater pollution in the Jaffna Peninsula Sri Lanka- Development of an integrated water resources management strategy using a 3D hydraulic model coupled with field experiments in Collaboration with Mott MacDonald).
  • Assessment of the extent of hydrocarbons pollution of ground and surface waters due to petrochemical activities around the Kaduna Province-Nigeria and development of sustainable short & long term remediation strategies (Petroleum Technology Development Fund).
  • Use of novel adsorbents for the removal of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) -Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenezene and Xylene from wastewaters – A kinetic and mechanistic modelling approach.
