Volunteering

We have an active volunteering programme.  In 2010-11 over 1000 students and members of staff gave up their time to help out with everything from conservation work to supporting the arts in schools.

Under a partnership between the Students’ Union Community Volunteering group and Surrey’s Educational Liaison Centre, more than 300 students took part in educational projects in over 40 schools and colleges, including:

  • a Playground Activities Scheme to develop pupils’ cooperation and problem-solving skills
  • a Reading Mentor Scheme to help improve pupils’ reading skills
  • Educational Volunteering Projects with Surrey Police, Surrey Wildlife Trust and Watts Gallery to implement arts and environment-based initiatives.

Other activities included:

  • helping to run a Christmas shoebox appeal in aid of Guildford Action, a drop-in centre for the homeless, and Your Sanctuary, a women’s refuge
  • clearance and conservation of local woodland and properties as part of the national ‘Make a Difference Day’
  • running a fun family quiz at Park Barn Day Centre in Guildford.
