Sustainability

Maximising sustainability, recycling waste and minimising our impact on the environment is of great concern to us. We are committed to a wide-ranging policy of carbon-reduction.

For example, Surrey Sports Park’s energy efficiency and carbon reduction measures include efficient gas-fired condensing boilers, combined with a Biomass boiler for baseload heating which is carbon neutral. Other measures across campus have reduced our total CO2 emissions by an average of 1,450 tonnes per year. More information about sustainability at Surrey.

Benefits to the local and national economy

The University has a diverse and positive economic impact both locally and nationally.

  • We are one of the region’s largest employers with nearly 2,600 staff
  • We bring over 15,000 students to Guildford, spending £6,000 per annum, on average, in the town and region, amounting to an overall figure of approximately £66m. In addition our staff salaries are around £105m (including costs), of which more than 75% goes to staff living in Surrey.
  • We have a substantial capital programme that has created buildings and facilities accessible to the public.  These include the Surrey Sports Park and the Ivy Arts Centre.
  • Surrey Research Park hosts over 140 companies and employs over 2750 staff with a salary spend in excess of £130m.
  • We also subsidise local transport systems.
  • Many Surrey students remain in the area making a further contribution to the local economy after they graduate.
