Paralympic Silver for Guildford’s Hannah Russell

Monday 3 September 2012

Team GB and Guildford City Swimmer Hannah Russell took a silver medal in the women’s S12 400m freestyle final on Thursday evening, finishing her Paralympic Games debut in style.

The 16 year old Surrey Sports Park athlete missed out on the gold medal by just 0.71 seconds, having briefly lead what was a two-swimmer fight for 1st place with Russia’s Oxana Savchenko.

Talking to Get Surrey after the race Hannah said: “To come here and medal was a bonus for me. I really just wanted to come here and PB and try to make as many finals as possible."

“I just want to try my hardest in every event here. I’ve put all the training in so hopefully I can do a PB and get into another final.

“I could hear the crowd coming home on that last length so I just kicked as hard as I could and kept my head down to the finish.”

Hannah will compete in a further 4 events at the Games, starting with Sunday’s S12 100m butterfly- another chance to secure a medal.
