Most economic models do not include banks. Many experts have widely diverging views on how banks affect the economy.

The crisis has underlined the need to understand banks better and incorporate them in analyses of the economy, social welfare and sustainability. In this talk, an empirically-based framework for analysing banks is presented (the quantity theory of credit). Further, the sustainability of banking as well as the impact of banking on sustainability issues are discussed. Various policy options are discussed.
