Recent research and policy studies on the low-carbon future highlight the importance of a more flexible demand of electricity. The integration of new technologies, like heat pumps and electric vehicles, is expected to bring about increases in peak electricity demand which may not be met by intermittent supply.

Demand Side Response activities are designed to incentivise flexibility of electricity demand. At the moment in the UK and Europe the focus of Demand Side Response is on retail and industrial consumers rather than residential ones. However, the introduction of smart meter roll-outs with half-hourly metering data communicated from households to utilities, along with time of day pricing programmes will increase the opportunities for future penetration of residential Demand Side Response.
As part of my presentation I will look at various aspects of Demand Side Response, including: simulations about the potential of Demand Side Response under capacity mechanisms; how time use data can help understand the flexibility of residential electricity loads; and the extent to which time of day pricing programmes enable load shifting.
