A presentation will be given on the Industrial Symbiosis at Kalundborg, Denmark, - the classic example of an industrial ecological network.  The history of the spontaneous evolution of the symbiosis is presented, from the very start up to the present situation.

The results that have been achieved are described. The mechanisms that made the symbiosis grow in Kalundborg, and what may be the reasons why this happened in Kalundborg.

The factors that stimulate or impede the formation of an industrial symbiosis are  discussed. The barriers for the introduction of an industrial symbiosis are neither technical, systematic nor environmental, but have to do with human communication and the ability to co-operate across company boundaries.

Comparisons are made to other symbioses in different countries. The future perspectives are discussed.
