Joss Tantram is director of TERRAFINITI, a sustainable business and systems consultancy based in Guildford. Terrafiniti’s major current programme of research and business consulting is called TOWARDS 9 BILLION. The core idea is that we should be trying to shape policies and market frameworks that would enable us to welcome the idea of a world of 9 billion people, not fear it, and to conserve and enhance natural capital and ecosystem services.
Joss will discuss the core elements of the 9 Billion programme and open up discussion about the values and strategies we need to design systems that can give hope for a sustainable world by 2050:
- Focusing on abundance instead of scarcity as the basis for design of sustainable economies;
- Natural vitality: making use of the Earth’s natural restorative capacities in designing sustainable technologies and economic models;
- Balanced interdependence: designing policies that recognize our economic, social and environmental dependence on others.

Towards 9 Billion programme. He will be drawing on these in his talk and would be glad to take questions and open up discussion based on the issues raised in them.
