Thursday 21 March 2013
Dr Yacob Mulugetta, Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Environmental Strategy (CES) at the University of Surrey recently rejoined CES after spending just over two years in Ethiopia as Senior Energy and Climate Specialist at the UN Economic Commission for Africa where he also helped to set up the African Climate Policy Centre (ACPC); he also served as acting coordinator of the Centre from May 2012 to October 2012. Whilst at ACPC, he initiated and led the Centre's climate-relevant energy activities as well as the work on climate finance and market mechanisms for mitigation options. Yacob played a major role in the ACPC’s efforts to build strong working relationships with the African Group of Negotiators on climate change, as well as a wide-range of policy and knowledge institutions across Africa and beyond. Yacob has now also taken up the role of Coordinating Lead Author of the Energy Systems chapter of the IPCC’s 5th Assessment Report (Working Group III on Mitigation) and a member of the Core Writing Team of the IPCC Synthesis Report. In CES Yacob will continue to develop further work in linking energy systems, climate and development and will draw on his experience and networks from Africa and other developing countries in his future work.
