Biography

Michalis joined the CES in October 2010 as a PhD research student. His research primarily focuses on the impacts of tourism on water resources in the semi-arid island of Cyprus. Michalis holds a bachelor's degree in Physical Geography from Cambridge University, a maitrise in hydrology from Joseph Fourier University in Grenoble, France, and an MSc in Water Science, Policy and Management from Oxford University.

Michalis is supervised by Dr. Jonathan Chenoweth and Dr. Angela Druckman from CES and Dr. Graham Miller from the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management.

Research Interests

Michalis is engaged in interdisciplinary research which aims to quantify direct and indirect water use by different types of tourists in Cyprus. In his PhD thesis, Michalis is exploring the use of environmental input-output analysis alongside detailed questionnaire data on tourism expenditure. The objectives of his research which link to various publications listed below are as follows:

  1. Perform market segmentation for the Cyprus tourism market
  2. Estimate tourism yield for the different tourism markets (using Tourism Satellite Accounts and Input-Output Analysis)
  3. Estimate tourism productivity of different tourism markets (using Environmental Input-Output analysis)
  4. Explore the role of diet using disaggregated agricultural statistics and detailed expenditure from questionnaires.

Additional academic areas of interest are:  hydrology/water quality; Mediterranean climate and hydrology; Water resources management in the Mediterranean; sustainable tourism/water use efficiency in tourism; virtual water and water footprinting.
