Postgraduate Taught: Masters Degrees

As leaders in environmental and sustainability related research and postgraduate teaching in the UK, and with a wide range of disciplines devoted to researching an array of environmental problems, we offer three MSc taught courses as part of a modular programme. Our MSc courses can be taken as full-time or part-time.

Our Masters programmes challenge students to think systematically and creatively, and act pragmatically. They are, by design, multidisciplinary, involving the application of a wide range of engineering, natural and social sciences to problems of resource use and environmental management and recognised by the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA). Modules are delivered by the Centre’s own staff and leading experts from industry, public agencies and academic partners. Graduates are able to implement ISO14001, undertake sustainability assessments and life cycle assessments, develop energy and low carbon policies and introduce corporate social responsibility programmes into organisations.

The programmes are taught through a series of intensive, week-long modules and a dissertation, with the option of a placement in industry or the public sector. The modular structure means the course can be followed full time or part time, and is thus highly suited to those in work. Students gain enormously from sharing the wealth of experience existing amongst their peers. As well as the MSc degrees, most modules are available to be taken singly as part of continuing professional development or can contribute to a Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma.

Students are accepted on the Masters programmes from a full range of academic backgrounds, including the engineering, physical and social sciences, with each of these backgrounds bringing different strengths which are built upon during the MSc. Students on the Centre for Environmental Strategy Masters programmes are encouraged to undertake a placement with a company, NGO or public sector body as part of their MSc degree, with the contacts and experience that students gain from these placements helping the University of Surrey maintain one of the highest employment rates of any UK university.
