About Us

Welcome to the Department of Computing's web site. We are an active department within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, with 21 full-time academic staff and around 400 students at all levels from undergraduate through to PhD. We are proud of our reputation as a friendly department and aim to provide a supportive environment for our student population.

Our degree programmes and all-round student experience is highly rated in the national student survey and league table results. Our undergraduate and MSc degree programmes are stimulating and challenging with a high level of practical content, and we are constantly exploring the use of new technology in lectures, such as podcasts and voting handsets, to support greater interactivity, accessibility, and enjoyment of lectures. We also organise extra-curricular activity for those who want to explore other aspects of computing in more depth, while we support local schools and colleges to bring some of the exciting aspects of computing to school pupils.

Our research interests are many and varied, ranging across the Department's research groups of Digital Ecosystems, Formal Methods and Security, Multimedia Security & Forensics, and Nature Inspired Computing and Engineering. The Department has a strong research culture and a growing research profile, and we have won several prizes, including the University Voting Systems Competition System Design award in 2007, and the prestigious Institution of Engineering and Technology Innovation in Engineering Security award in 2006.

Among the 21 academics, 6 have received recognitions from at least one professional society in related field by being elected to the highest level of membership (fellowship), which include 4 Fellows of BCS (Prof Anthony TS Ho, Prof Steve Schneider, Prof Yaochu Jin, Dr Lee Gillam), 2 Fellows of IET (Prof Anthony TS Ho, Prof Jianmin Jiang), 1 Fellow of IMA (Prof Paul Krause), 1 Fellow of IOP (Prof Anthony TS Ho). In addition, 6 academics (Prof Anthony TS Ho, Prof Yaochu Jin, Dr Saeid Sanei, Dr Lee Gillam, Dr Shujun Li) are members of technical committees of IEEE or ISO, and 6 academics (Prof Anthony TS Ho, Prof Jianmin Jiang, Prof Yaochu Jin, Dr Lee Gillam, Dr Shujun Li, Dr Mark Manulis) are currently serving on the editorial boards of 20 international scientific journals. Academics of the Department have also been involved in organisation committees and technical programme committees of numerous international scientific conferneces and workshops, e.g. in 2009 Prof Anthony TS Ho was chairing the IWDW 2009 workshop at Surrey, and in 2013 the Department is going to chair three conferences/workshops (UKCI 2013, Vote-ID 2013 and AVOCS 2013) at Surrey.
