Dr Hugh Deighton, LogicaCMG

Abstract:

This talk will examine the practical aspects of the management of large bespoke and systems integration software projects in various application areas such as Space, Energy, Defence and Telecoms. In particular, the challenges and issues which affect mission critical software systems developments will be examined, focusing on safety and security intensive systems integration projects. The seminar will discuss project management techniques ranging from planning and tracking to team management and human factors.

Notes:

Hugh Deighton joined Logica (now LogicaCMG) in 1985 after a varied career ranging from accountancy to teaching philosophy in Canada. He has managed some of the most sophisticated software development projects which the company has undertaken, including the installation of the new Ariane rocket launching control system for the French Space Agency (CNES) at their launch site in French Guiana. This system has to be both safe (to ensure that the launch proceeds along the correct trajectory) and secure (to ensure that no unauthorised interference is allowed) and its management was complex and challenging. After taking a BSc in Physics at Queen Elizabeth College London, Dr Deighton received a PhD in Physics from King’s College London.
