The presentation provides a brief review of current military needs together with an assessment of how image and data processing technology can be used to meet these capability gaps.

A range of examples are presented that show how image and data processing can be used within a variety of different applications ranging from airborne, maritime, and land-based platforms. These system examples are based on specific activities and programmes undertaken by Waterfall Solutions Ltd.

Dr Duncan Hickman is the Chief Engineer within WS. His background is in the modelling and design of complex EO/IR systems and has gained many years of experience working at BAE Systems, Oxford University, Matra Marconi and Thales Optronics.

Prior to joining WS 5 years ago, Duncan ran major defence programmes within both Thales and BAE Systems.

Duncan has a first degree in Theoretical Physics, an MSc and PhD in novel sensor designs, and an MBA. In January 2010, he was appointed as an Associate Reader within Surrey University.

Duncan has published numerous papers and holds a range of patents for sensor design. Duncan has received a number of awards including that for the design and development of a wide area imaging system from BAE Systems
