When dealing with real data, clustering becomes a very complex problem, usually admitting many reasonable solutions. Moreover, even if completely different, such solutions can appear almost equivalent from the point of view of classical quality measures such as the distortion value. This implies that blind optimisation techniques alone are prone to discard qualitatively interesting solutions.

In this seminar, an alternative approach to clustering, including the generation of a number of good solutions through global optimisation, the analysis of such solutions through meta clustering and the final construction of a small set of solutions through consensus clustering is presented.

Biography

From 1986 to 2000 Roberto Tagliaferri was researcher of Computer Science and Cybernetics, from March 2000 to October 2006 was Associate Professor of Computer Science and since November 1 2006 has been full Professor at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Salerno, in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Neural Networks and in Bioinformatics.

He has co-organized Italian and international workshops on Neural Networks and Bioinformatics from 1988, mainly, WIRN, CIBB, special sessions at  IJCNN and WCCI. He has been co-editor of special issues on international journals: International Journal of Approximate Reasoning (2008), Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (2009) and International Journal of Knowledge Engineering and Soft Data Paradigms (2010). He was co-director of the INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL ON MATHEMATICS "GUIDO STAMPACCHIA", 50th Workshop on Optimization, Machine Learning and Bioinformatics in 2010 and scientific responsible of the Erasmus intensive course on "Interdisciplinary Approaches to Microarray Data Analysis" in 2010 and in 2011.

The scientific activity has been oriented to the design and analysis of models to describe complex systems through the use of Neural Networks, and to the design of architectures and of learning paradigms for Connectionists models. Such activity has produced the development of several applications in the following areas:

  • Signal and Image Processing,
  • Clustering, Classification and Visualization of multidimensional data,
  • Environmental diagnostic,
  • Anomaly identification in industrial systems,
  • Bioinformatics,
  • Medical Prognostics,
  • Survival analysis.

He has published more than 100 journal and proceedings papers and edited 12 books.

Roberto Tagliaferri has been member of "Council of Directors" of Istituto Internazionale per gli Alti Studi Scientifici (IIASS) "E.R. Caianiello" from 1991. He has been member of the Scientific Committee of Società Italiana Reti Neuroniche (SIREN) from 1991. He was secretary of SIREN from 1994 to 2005. He was member of the RIG Steering Committee of the IEEE Neural Networks Council from 1997 to 2000. He has been Chair of the Committee for "SIGs and Regional Chapters in Europe, Middle East and Africa" of the International Neural Networks Society (INNS) from 2009, co-Chair of the SIG in Bioinformatics from 2005. He is senior member of the IEEE "Computational Intelligence" and "System, Man and Cybernetics" societies and of INNS. He is member of New York Academy of Sciences.
