Dr Nowill will present a view of Cyber and Cyber Security from the Telecommunications perspective, as well as covering the sort of work that professionals address in information and network security and related opportunities. This will be drawn from a wide range of experiences and examples with links to the National Cyber Security Strategy and how industry contributes, as well as how individuals may contribute at a personal level.
Biography


Dr Robert Nowill (Bob) is the Director for Cyber, Consulting and Information Assurance at BT Security.
Bob has an Engineering and IT background and inter-alia has led IT Security work through technical project and programme management, design, Information Assurance(IA), support, operations, investigations, fraud, applied research, risk management, testing, compliance, architecture and commercial procurement teams.
Before joining BT in 2005, Bob was the Director of Technology & Engineering and Board Member at the UK’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ).
His career has also included periods with UK MoD (Defence Procurement Agency and Research Agencies), in The Netherlands with The SHAPE Technical Centre, and research at Cambridge University Engineering Department. He graduated from Cambridge University (Trinity College) in 1977, and subsequently read for a PhD also at Cambridge. He is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered IT Professional, a Fellow of the IET and of the BCS, and a full Member of the Institute of Information Security Professionals (M.Inst.ISP). He is the Chair of the IISP’s Accreditation Committee.
Bob was named in the “Secure Computing (SC) Most Influential 2010” list in association with (ISC)2 as amongst the most influential people in information security.
Bob is married to Dr Joanna Nowill, a Counselling Psychologist, and they share three adult children and a passion for rescue-Greyhounds.
