Guildford's BCS Young Professionals Group workshops

Tuesday 25 September 2007

Chris Culnane and Roger Peel have organised a series of Young Professionals Group (YPG) workshops for the Guildford Branch of the British Computer Society (BCS). The sessions will cover a range of topics, from guest lectures to Java, and are being held every Tuesday at 6:30pm in room 39BB02, starting on September 25th. All welcome.

The Young Professionals Group of the British Computer Society has decided to run some workshops to introduce a range of computing topics for students and provide the opportunity to enhance CVs with non-coursework activities.

Chris Culnane, one of the Department's PhD students and our YPG committee member,has taken the lead and has produced an exciting programme for the year. He will be joined by other members of the Department and by industrial guests.

We will be pleased to welcome Angus Chisholm from IBM in Farnborough to many of the sessions, too.

The BCS has agreed to fund some prizes for the challenges that we will be setting along the way.

The programme will include:

- Java and mobile Java - e.g. how to program mobile phone applications;
- Aspects of Open Source software, including Linux and virtualisation tools;
- Lego Mindstorms and other small systems using Java
- Practical Computer Networking and Management
- Web Hosting and PHP
- Guest Talks

The first talk, at 18:30 on Tuesday 25th September 2007 in 39BB02, will introduce a DVD of Open Source software that we will be using throughout the year. In the practical session, we will install NetBeans and implement a very simple mobile telephone application. No programming will be required for this first step.

Bring your laptop if you have one!
