Students meet with UK's first semi-programmable computer

Monday 23 July 2007

On Saturday 21st July, a group of students and staff visited the home of the National Museum of Computing at Bletchley Park. Bletchley was home to code breakers during World War II, who famously cracked the German Enigma cipher.

One of the highlights of the trip was the National Museum of Computing, held in Block H of Bletchley. This hosts the Colossus Rebuild Project, where a group of enthusiasts have been rebuilding a Mark 2 Colossus, the world's first semi-programmable computer, built to help crack the Lorenz cipher.

Bletchley is also famously the place where Alan Turing worked during the war to help crack the Enigma cipher.

Pictures and videos of Bletchley and Colossus can be found for registered users on the Department's forum.
