Surrey Computing helps to untangle the web
Friday 20 July 2007
The Department of Computing delivered a virtual class about the history and technologies of the World Wide Web and how to make effective use of HTML. The session was delivered by Dr Lee Gillam and Dr Helen Treharne on Thursday 19 July to a class of Year 9 pupils at Coombe Girls' School.
The virtual class used Access Grid video-conferencing systems to link schools with the University, and was run as part of a project funded by the Higher Education Academy for Information and Computer Sciences (HEA-ICS) and the University of Surrey's Widening Participation initiative.
The session was well received by the pupils who asked some particularly searching technical questions about HTML. Pupils were interested, also, in how restrictions were made at school on access to specific websites and whether these could be circumvented.
Access Grid technology support was provided by Gary Dear from the Department of Computing, with a team at Coombe Girls' School including Andrew Martin, the girls' teacher.
Virtual classroom links have been established due to the project with Coombe's two schools and with Esher College. This is the third virtual session to have taken place.
