IBM and Surrey first to run successful mainframe course

Monday 16 July 2007

As part of the Department's Internet Computing MSc programme, IBM have taught our students all about mainframe technologies. The module, the first in the UK to be run in collaboration with IBM, was taught by IBM staff at the University. Comments such as "This course has broadened my horizons and brought me closer to real industry" demonstrate the value of such industrial relationships.

As part of the module, students who took the course were invited to spend a day at IBM Hursley, learning about different aspects on IBM, not just about "System z". The aim of the alliance between IBM and universities is to help develop a stronger base of mainframe skills within graduates, overcoming the shortage of people who can support business critical applications. Following on from this trip, Michelle Greensit was nominated by IBM to spend three days in IBM La Gaude, France, at the IBM Best Student Event.
