The next lecture of the Guildford Branch of the British Computer Society (BCS) will be held on Thursday 27th November 2008, at 19:45 for 20:00, in Lecture Theatre F. Emma Duke-Williams from the University of Portsmouth will give an introduction to online ecosystems: blogging and wikis.

Online Ecosystems: Blogging and Wikis

This talk will provide an introduction to blogs, wikis and virtual worlds, and how they might be used. These Web 2.0 concepts provide social networking capabilities - communications, information sharing, and collaborative content generation. The introduction will be followed by a discussion on how blogs and wikis could be used in different work or social environments. Some of the pitfalls, in terms of security and data protection, will also be covered.

Emma Duke-Williams is a senior lecturer in the School of Computing at the University of Portsmouth She is currently working partly as an eLearning Co-ordinator for the Technology Faculty. Her areas of interest cover how computers can be used to support and facilitate learning, in particular looking at online community building through a number of different Web 2.0 tools.
