Final year students making giant leaps
Wednesday 11 June 2008
Our final year students are thinking about their careers at the end of all their hard work. So far, they have secured jobs with Accenture, ProspectSoft, Reuters and JPMorgan Chase. Surrey boasts one of the highest graduate employment rates for UK universities, with the Department having a 95% employment rate after 6 months, as recorded by the 2007 National Student Survey.
For example, we are pleased to report that Natalie Akumiah has secured a place with Accenture Technology Solutions, Paul Davis is going to ProspectSoft, Simon Moore will be working for Reuters in Canary Wharf, and Peter Yung Hok will be joining the investment bank JPMorgan Chase in London. However, the end of the semester is not all about jobs just yet. Simon, for example, is planning a long trip to Australia and New Zealand, while Steve Jolly is taking a year out to travel around the Far East before working as a scuba diving instructor at the Great Barrier Reef for six months. That was after his celebratory bungee jump, all recorded for posterity and released on YouTube, of course.
Surrey's high employment rate is partly attributed to the success of the placement year. Peter Yung Hok thinks that the placement year is " so valuable, not only in terms of knowledge and experience but in terms of the opportunity itself." He then goes on to relate his experiences at his placement company with his efforts in the final year of his studies, enabling him to get an overall higher performance in his grades than before. Peter has secured a job with his placement company JPMorgan Chase.
