National workshop on immersive worlds for recent MSc graduate
Tuesday 24 November 2009
Nabil Asif, a 2009 graduate from the MSc in Information Systems programme, was recently invited to present an overview of his dissertation at the National Workshop on Learning in Immersive Worlds, held on the 11th November at Coventry University.
Nabil’s dissertation involved investigation into dementia and how it may be possible to use virtual worlds to construct scenarios using virtual actors (avatars) that demonstrate different features of dementia. Rapid development of simulations of such scenarios could support training of healthcare professionals, and enable the wider public to understand what dementia “looks like”. As well as considering general strategies of how to utilise virtual worlds, designs were presented for a usable system that would allow non-technical users to construct such scenarios without requiring a steep learning curve for the virtual world itself. The presentation was very well received.
Nabil’s dissertation was supervised by Dr Lee Gillam, with collaborative supervision and subject expertise provided by dementia care specialist Dr Trevor Adams (Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences).
