Change of Career for Dr Roger Peel

Monday 13 December 2010

Roger has been a pillar of the department since when it was formed back in 1997, although he has been with the Faculty for about thirty years.  His excellent support, dedication and commitment over the years has been much appreciated.

He has always taken the extra time to talk to students and staff and provided guidance and help without hesitation when people ask for it.

We will be sorry to see  Roger move on and he will be sorely missed.  However, this is a substantial opportunity for him and we wish Roger well for the future.  He will be leaving at the end of 2010 to join 4Links Ltd. Bio below.

- BSc Mathematics with Computer Science, University of Surrey.
- Industrial Year at ICL, Bracknell, working on mainframe computer performance measurement.
- Final year project - controlling the 4.5-ton satellite tracking antenna on the top of BB.

1980 to 1981 - ICL, Kidsgrove - more mainframes.

1981 to 1984 - Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Surrey, writing all the early flight software for UoSAT 1 and UoSAT 2, and built the on-board computer for UoSAT 2.

1984 to 1997 - Lecturer, then Senior Lecturer in Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Surrey; teaching microprocessor engineering, computer programming, computer architectures, parallel computing and digital logic.  Worked with INMOS transputers, which were ground-breaking distributed microprocessors suited to high-performance embedded systems.

1990 to 1995 - part-time PhD, developing highly parallel transputer implementation of the TCP/IP networking protocols, and several related instrumentation applications.
